BMKG Kick Off On-Site Phase of The Basic Instruction Package for Meteorological Technicians (BIP-MT) Training for the Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS)

JAKARTA, 3 August 2026 — Following the successful conclusion of its self-paced learning phase, the Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics of the Republic of Indonesia (BMKG) has officially commenced the On-Site Training Phase of the Basic Instruction Package for Meteorological Technicians (BIP-MT) Training for the Pacific Small Island Developing States (SIDS). Running from 3 to 28 August 2026, this training program is a collaborative initiative between the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and BMKG, implemented under the UNEP CIS-Pac5 programme framework. Building directly upon the previous self-paced phase, this in-person component also hosts the three selected technical meteorologists from the Pacific region: two participants from the Tuvalu Meteorological Service and one from the Cook Islands Meteorological Service.

To optimize academic exposure and technical mastery, the intensive four-week curriculum is delivered by subject matter experts from the Directorate for Instrumentation and Calibration of BMKG alongside the State College of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (STMKG). The first week of the program, 3-7 August 2026, takes place at the BMKG Headquarters in Jakarta, offering participants direct operational exposure to the national observation systems of BMKG. For the subsequent three weeks, 10-28 August 2026, the training will shift to the campus facilities of STMKG in Tangerang. Here, participants will develop a deeper understanding of the core BIP-MT curriculum in strict alignment with World Meteorological Organization (WMO-No. 1083) standards, focusing on core competencies in physical and dynamic meteorology, synoptic and mesoscale meteorology and climatology.

By equipping these meteorologists from Pacific SIDS, this joint capacity-building initiative aims to strengthen the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) across the region, which in turn, the enhanced technical capabilities will strengthen climate resilience throughout the Pacific islands region.
